SAVANNAH TUGBOAT
Tugboat Play Area
River Street is one of Savannah's most popular destinations for tourists and locals. Looking at it now, you would not have guessed that in the early 70s it was a ghost town and destined to become a parking lot. But architects Eric Meyerhoff and Bob Gunn had a vision to transform it into a bustling downtown area. After the redesign, Meyerhoff thought there should be something for kids to enjoy and so the first riverfront tugboat was created. Over the years the tugboat was renovated several times due to the deterioration of the wood it was built from. It was eventually removed from its spot on River Street in 2019.
Following the passing of her father, Margot Meyerhoff started to work towards getting the tugboat rebuilt. The project was important to her because of all the projects her father worked on it was his favorite one. He once said, "Everyone that goes to the tugboat has a smile on their face."
I had the pleasure of being part of the team that brought back this iconic piece of Savannah, which was redesigned with longer lasting materials and converted to be ADA accessible. My role on the project was redesigning the boat and creating the construction documents.
